EPSMF ANNOUNCES INSTRUMENT AWARDS AND FINALISTS IN 2024 COMPETITION FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS

El Paso, Texas–The El Paso Society for Musicians of the Future (EPSMF) announces seven finalists for the 2024 Competition for Young Musicians.  This competition calls to exceptionally talented students between the ages of eight and nineteen to compete for cash awards with classical music repertoire. The competition has grown to cross borders with local, national, and international applications. The top award is $1800 and the opportunity to perform in EPSMF’s events followed by second and third place awards of $700 and $500. All of the finalists in this competition will be publicly recognized for their achievements. 

Competition performances will be live and recorded on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (5005 Love Road, El Paso, TX 79922) at 3PM.

The 2024 Competition Finalists are: 

Sophia Cao - piano

Sophia Cao is the sixth grade and attends a public school. She has studied piano for six years and currently studies piano with Anna Habicht. She was the first prize winner in the Borderland Chopin Festival 2023 for Category A, fifth grade and under.

Jane Elizabeth Caranto- piano

Jane Elizabeth Caranto is thirteen and attends the St. Philomena Homeschool Academy. She has studied piano for five years and currently studies with Anna Habicht. She has performed in several Solo and Sonatina festivals as well as Baroque Festivals. 

Judy Caranto - piano

Judy Caranto is sixteen and attends the St. Philomena Homeschool Academy. She has studied piano for eight years and currently studies piano with Anna Habicht. She has performed in several solo and sonatina festivals and baroque competitions and placed third in the Borderland Chopin Festival 2023. Judy was a finalist in the EPSMF 2021 Competition for Young Musicians and placed third in the 2022 and 2023 EPSMF Competitions.

Catherine (Sunny) Ellsworth - cello

Sunny Ellsworth is seventeen and is homeschooled. She has studied the cello for twelve years and currently studies with Hyerim Mapp. She has attended the University of North Texas Summer Strings Institute, Louisiana State University Collaborative Piano Institute, the University of Kansas Orchestra Camp, and Interlochen Cello Intensive. She was the second place winner in EPSMF 2023 Competition for Young Musicians and currently plays with the local youth orchestras, El Paso Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Las Cruces Youth Orchestra.

Anna Dang - piano

Anna Dang is thirteen and attends Hornedo Middle School. She studied the piano for eight years and currently studies Anna Habicht. She is a member of the Hornedo Orchestra and the Hornedo Jazz Band. She has also participated in the Midwest 2023 International Band/Orchestra Clinic and in Texas Music Educators Association events.

Isabella Tosado-Díaz - piano

Isabella Tosado-Díaz is seventeen and is homeschooled. She has been playing piano for six years and currently studies with Anna Habicht. She participated in the Borderland Chopin Festival 2023 and has participated in five consecutive years in local Baroque and Solo and Sonatina Festivals.

Bradley Yoshawirja - piano

Bradley Yoshawirja is ten and attends Polk Elementary School. He has been playing piano for five years and currently studies with Anna Habicht. He participated in the Borderland Chopin Festival 2023 and has participated in local Solo and Sonatina Festivals.

This year’s instrument recipients are:

Catherine (Sunny) Ellsworth - cello

Sunny Ellsworth is seventeen and is homeschooled. She has studied the cello for twelve years and currently studies with Hyerim Mapp. She has attended the University of North Texas Summer Strings Institute, Louisiana State University Collaborative Piano Institute, the University of Kansas Orchestra Camp, and Interlochen Cello Intensive. She was the second place winner in EPSMF 2023 Competition for Young Musicians and currently plays with the local youth orchestras, El Paso Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Las Cruces Youth Orchestra. Sunny states, “I hope to be doing music for the rest of my life…”

Teresa de la Peña-Franceschi - violin

Teresa dela Peña-Franceschi is seventeen and a student at El Paso High School. She has been playing the violin for 9 years and currently studies with Eric Rangel. She is first violin in her state qualified quintet and first violin in the El Paso High School Orchestra. According to Teresa, “I find the ways music makes people feel so magical…I want the ability to translate what I feel and what others fell into music allowing others to experience feelings that only fill them more.”

Applications for the 2024-2025 Competition for Young Musicians and Instruments for Young Lives Program will be available in September 2024.

El Paso, Texas–The El Paso Society for Musicians of the Future (EPSMF) announces the winners for the 2023 Competition for Young Musicians.  This competition calls to exceptionally talented students between the ages of eight and nineteen to compete for cash awards with classical music repertoire. The top award is $1800 followed by second and third place awards of $700 and $500. All of the finalists in this competition will be publicly recognized for their achievements. 

Competition performances were live and recorded on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (5005 Love Road, El Paso, TX 79922) at 3PM. A recording of the finalists' performance will be available on the EPSMF website (www.epsmf.org).

The 2023 Competition for Young Musician Standings are: 

WINNER: Kathryn Haluschak- piano

Kathryn Haluschak is seventeen and is homeschooled.  She studies piano with Anna Habicht. She has played in several ensembles, All State Festivals and numerous Sonatina and Solo Festivals through EPMTA. Kathryn was a finalist in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 EPSMF competitions and placed second in the 2022 EPSMF Competition for Young Musicians.

2nd PLACE: Sunny Ellsworth - cello

Sunny Ellsworth is sixteen and is homeschooled. She has studied the cello for twelve years and currently studies with Hyerim Mapp. She has attended the University of North Texas Summer Strings Institute and the Louisiana State University Collaborative Piano Institute. Last year, she was invited to play with the New Mexico State Philharmonic.

3rd PLACE: Judy Caranto - piano

Judy Caranto is fifteen and attends the St. Philomena Homeschool Academy. She has studied piano for seven years and currently studies piano with Anna Habicht. She has performed in several solo and sonatina festivals and baroque competitions. Judy was a finalist in the EPSMF 2021 Competition for Young Musicians and placed third in the 2022 EPSMF Competition.

RECOGNITION FOR ACHIEVEMENT: Sophia Cao - piano

Sophia Cao is ten and attends a public school. She has studied piano for five years and currently studies piano with Anna Habicht. She has participated, in the past three years, in the Texas Music Teachers Association Baroque Piano Competition.




RECOGNITION FOR ACHIEVEMENT: Ittai Schweiger - piano

Ittai Schweiger is fifteen and attends I-University Prep/ He has been playing piano for seven years and currently studies with Anna Habicht. He has won awards in two Baroque festivals. He also plays with his church worship band.

RECOGNITION FOR ACHIEVEMENT: Stephan Hatem - piano

Stephan Hatem is sixteen and attends Eastwood High School where he is in the Top 20 of his class. He has studied the piano for seven years and currently studies with Dr. Ezequiel Meza.

The 2023 INSTRUMENTS FOR YOUNG LIVES AWARDS RECIPIENT: 

Alexa Ortiz-Hernandez – Bb clarinet

Alexa Ortiz-Hernandez is eighteen and a senior at El Dorado High School. She has performed with the All Region Band (2020-2023), Aside from playing in El Dorado High School bands and orchestra, she has participated in the All State Band (2023) and the Southwest Honor Band (2022-2023). She has received the Drum Major Award and has recognized as an Outstanding Honor Ban Member. According to Alexa, “my passion for music is huge… an instrument of my own would be the best tool to not only study my passion but to spread my love for it to those around me.”

Competition finalists will receive their awards at the EPSMF OM/NI Talk: String 2023 event on Sunday, August 13, 2023, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church (5005 Love Road) at 3PM. This event is free to the public. All are welcome to attend.

The 2022 Competition Finalists are: 

Catherine Claire Ancell- piano

Claire Ancell is fourteen and attends El Paso High School. She has been studying piano for eight years and currently studies with Dr. Ezekiel Meza. Claire has performed in several EPMTA affiliate recitals as well as Sonata Festivals and Solo Festivals. She is inspired by Argentine-Swiss classical concert pianist Martha Argerich.

Judy Caranto- piano

Judy Caranto is fourteen and attends the St. Philomena Homeschool Academy. She studies piano with Anna Habicht. She has performed in several solo and sonatina festivals and baroque competitions. Judy was a finalist in the EPSMF 2021 Competition for Young Musicians. She enjoys listening to Mozart compositions. 

Ricardo Chacón - cello

Ricardo Chacón is seventeen and a senior at Americas High School. He has been playing the cello for more than six years and currently studies with Jose Rios.  He performs with the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra, the UTEP Symphony Orchestra, the Americas High School Varsity Orchestra, and the TMEA All Region Symphony Orchestra. He is inspired by YoYo Ma. 

Kathryn Haluschak- piano

Kathryn Haluschak is sixteen and is homeschooled.  She studies piano with Anna Habicht. She has played in several ensembles, All State Festivals and numerous Sonatina and Solo Festivals through EPMTA.  She currently plays for her church youth choir. Kathryn was a finalist in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 EPSMF competitions. She enjoyed learning Claude Debussy’s L’isle Joyeuse. 

Sahid Palacios- violin

Sahid Palacios is eighteen and a freshman at New Mexico State University. He currently studies violin with Simon Gallo and performs with the NMSU Philharmonic Orchestra. and in a local Mariachi group. He has participated in the El Paso Border Folk Festival and in the State Mariachi Festival. He admires Friedrich-Max "Fritz" Kreisler “…because of his incredible charm and the nostalgia that he puts into his pieces.”

Vincent Yang - piano

Vincent Yang is seventeen and attends I-University Prep/ He has been playing piano for thirteen years and currently studies with Dr. Ezequiel Meza. He was the winner of the 2020 EPSMF Competition and has attended the International Keyboard Odyssiad and Festival U.S.A.  Vincent would like to perform for Sofia Gubaidulina and talk with her about interpretations of her work.

The 2022 INSTRUMENTS FOR YOUNG LIVES AWARDS RECIPIENT will also be introduced at this competition.

Luis Flores-Trejo - flute

Luis Flores-Trejo is sixteen and a junior at Ysleta High School. He has performed with the Ysleta Marching Band and the Ysleta Honor Concert Band. He has participated in All-Region Auditions and State Solo and Ensemble. He is the 4th Chair in the Symphonic All-Region Band.

 El Paso, Texas–The El Paso Society for Musicians of the Future (EPSMF) is pleased to announce the 2021, recipients of new instruments from its Instruments for Young Lives Program. These students have demonstrated musical and academic achievement, strong character and unmet financial need.  

 This year’s instrument recipients are: 

 Hannia Jiménez- flute 

Hannia is fifteen years old and a sophomore at Coronado High School. She participates in the Coronado High School Marching Band and the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra. Hannia states, “…I feel that music has been the most rewarding music that I have ever come across.” 

Christian Chaparro- oboe 

Christian is fourteen years old and an eight grade student at Ysleta Middle School. He has participated in the YISD Young Band Festival, the District Honor Band, and the Hanks Jazz Festival. Christian shared, “…it would be fulfilling knowing that my hard work paid off for something that is out of my reach.” 

New, step-up instruments will be awarded to these exceptional students.  

 The Instruments for Young Lives program is a partnership between The El Paso Society for Musicians of the Future and longtime El Paso business Olivas Music. The program is  

designed to assist talented young musicians with good instruments to support their music education. Applicants must demonstrate musical and academic excellence. Recipients will become participants in the El Paso Society for Musicians of the Future outreach and Ambassador Leadership Program.

Joanne Caranto- piano 

Joanne Caranto is seventeen and a senior at Jesus and Mary Academy. She studies piano with Anna Habicht. She has been a finalist in an EPMTA competition and achieved first place in a Baroque Competition.  She loves the music of Frédéric Chopin. 

Judy Caranto- piano 

Judy Caranto is thirteen and attends the St. Philomena Homeschool Academy. She studies piano with Anna Habicht. She has played in an EPMTA ensemble and sings in her church choir. She likes the music style of Enrique Granados. “It’s very calming and I enjoy listening to his pieces.” 

Andrew Griñé- trombone 

Andrew Griñé is fifteen and a sophomore at Coronado High School. He studies trombone with Susan Hernandez. He plays with the Coronado High School Band and Orchestra, the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the El Paso Youth Jazz Ensemble. He has also participated in the Philadelphia International Music Festival, and the Winter Solo Performance Preparation Program. He admires John Williams and “…would like to dive deeper into how he writes his music …to help fuel my creative passions.” 

Kathryn Haluschak- piano 

Kathryn Haluschak is fifteen and is homeschooled.  She studies piano with Anna Habicht. She has played in several ensembles, All State Festivals and numerous Sonatina and Solo Festivals through EPMTA.  She currently plays for her church youth choir. Kathryn was a finalist in the 2019 and 2020 EPSMF competitions. She appreciates the composer, Maurice Ravel, “because I admire the impressionistic style of his compositions.” 

Taekyu Lee- piano 

Taekyu Lee is eighteen and a senior at Coronado High School. He studies piano with Anna Habicht. He participates regularly in EPMTA competitions and plays with the Coronado High School Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras.  He has been a finalist in previous EPMSF competitions.  Taekyu also plays the cello. He enjoys Sergei Rachmaninoff’s music stating that he has “thoroughly enjoyed practicing his Moment Musicaux. I love how full-sounding and nuanced his compositions are....” 

Kathleen Liang- piano 

Kathleen Liang is seventeen and a senior at Coronado High School. She studies piano with Anna Habicht. She plays in the Coronado High School Varsity Orchestra and Music Ensemble. She has participated in the ASTA/ National Orchestra Festival and TMTA Competitions. According to Kathleen, she “was always interested in music as a child.”

EPSMF ANNOUNCES 2020 COMPETITION FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS WINNERS

El Paso, Texas–The El Paso Society for Musicians of the Future (EPSMF) announces the winners for the 2020 Competition for Young Musicians. Seven finalists competed with performances that streamed online on August 8, 2020 through Facebook and YouTube. In lieu of a face-to-face venue, this competition was recorded at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church under strict COVID-19 safety guidelines. Finalists were recorded on separate days. The recordings were compiled into a single online event.

This competition called to exceptionally talented students between the ages of 8 and 19 to compete for cash awards with classical music repertoire. The top award is $1800 and the opportunity to perform in EPSMF’s annual concert followed by second and third place awards of $700 and $500. All of the seven finalists in this competition will be publicly recognized for their achievements on the EPSMF website. Competition for Young Musicians Awards will be a special segment of EPSMF’s OM/NI (Original Music/ New Ideas) concert slated for Fall 2020.

About the Competition Finalists:

1st PLACE WINNER: Vincent Yang- piano

VINCENT YANG has studied piano with Dr. Esequiel Meza since 2016. He attends the Radford School. He was a semi-finalist in the 2016 IKOF USA (International Keyboard Odyssiad® and Festival). In 2018, Vincent placed 3rd in TMTA performance. He performed Shostakovich Concerto No. 2 in 2018 EPYSO Concerto Competition and was later invited by Crawford Buick GMC to perform piano recitals where he was interviewed by ABC News. Vincent took 1st place in the 2018 EPSMF Competition for Young Musicians. He was invited to play piano in the 2016 and 2019 re-opening ceremonies of two Public Libraries. In academics, he is the President of the National Junior Classical League (NJCL) and secretary of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). He founded the chess club in 2016, Taekwondo program in 2018, and the music club in 2019. Vincent received a scholarship for science project from MAES in 2016. He received the Duke TIP state recognition in 2017 and the Top 300 National Broadcom Masters Award in both 2017 and 2018 with an interview by NBC News. He received 3rd place in the 2019 El Paso Public Library Youth Poetry Contest; an honorable mention in the 2019 ISEF; 2nd place NHI debate competition in mock trial attorney position; and was given the 2019 Top 130 Debaters Award at the International Great Debate competition.

2nd PLACE: Kathryn Haluschak, piano

KATHRYN HALUSCHAK is a freshman at Loretto Academy High School and studies piano with Ms. Anna Habicht. Kathryn began playing the piano at the age of four and her love for the piano has grown with each year. She enjoys participating in the El Paso Music Teachers Association recitals, festivals, ensembles, and competitions. Kathryn has competed in the semi-final round of the Texas Music Teachers Association piano competition in the past two years. Through her participation in the Ambassador Leadership Program, Kathryn shares her love of music with others by playing the piano each week at her church, Holy Family Catholic Church. She recognizes that outreach inspires other to participate. She also enjoys sports and was a member of the Loretto Angels cross country team and track team. The high point of her cross-country season was competing at the state cross country meet with her teammates.  Kathryn attributes her work ethic to her study of music which requires discipline, dedication, and love.

3rd PLACE: Kathleen Liang, piano

KATHLEEN LIANG was born in El Paso TX and has been studying piano with Anna Habicht for 11 years. Kathleen placed third in the EPSYO competition in 2013 and was a TMTA semifinalist in 2017. She was also a finalist in the EPSMF 2018 competition and is a semifinalist for the 2020 TMTA performance competition taking place in Houston. Kathleen has also played the violin for seven years under the teachings of Brigid McCarthy. She is a three-time all-region qualifier, two-time area qualifier, three-time TSSEC state qualifier, and three-time Texas Music Scholar, and currently plays as concert mistress of the Coronado high school Varsity Orchestra. Kathleen is a junior and is a part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Coronado High School.

RECOGNITION FOR ACHIEVEMENT: Erasto Cortés, piano

ERASTO CORTES II was born in El Paso and is a senior attending Cathedral High School. He has been accepted into the University of Texas at El Paso and Texas Tech University. His piano career began at the age of three, learning the value of discipline and dedication from Elvira Spector. Mrs. Spector is also a professor at the University of Texas at El Paso in Music. In his off time, Erasto likes to play basketball, listen to music with his father, socialize with his mother, and spend time with his friends. He has also traveled internationally across the globe during summer. He has traveled to Costa Rica, Mexico City, Cancun, and Russia to watch the World Cup. Mr. Cortés plans to attend Texas Tech University to pursue a double major in Accounting and Sports Management in the Fall of 2020

RECOGNITION FOR ACHIEVEMENT: Ryan Esparza, piano

RYAN ESPARZA is a junior at Eastwood High School (EHS), where he ranks 3rd in the class of 2021.  He currently studies piano under Dr. Esequiel Meza.  He has played in the local EPMTA Solo Festivals and Sonata Festivals and was a finalist in the 2019 EPSMF Competition for Young Musicians.  In addition to the piano, Ryan also plays violin and guitar.  Throughout his freshman, sophomore, and junior years of high school, he has been a participant in the YISD Honor Orchestra, All-Region Orchestra, UIL State Solo and Ensemble, and is currently a member of the Eastwood High School Varsity Orchestra.  Ryan is also part of the EHS chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, where he has competed at the regional and state levels.  Ryan is a member of the EHS Speech and Debate team, receiving distinctions of merit and excellence from the National Speech and Debate Association.  Ryan is also a member of the EHS High-Q team and the EHS National Honor Society.  Ryan enjoys watching and playing basketball.

RECOGNITION FOR ACHIEVEMENT: John Esparza, piano

JOHN ESPARZA is seventeen years old and is a junior at Eastwood High School. He has been playing piano for ten years, currently under the instruction of Dr. Esequiel Mesa. John has participated in numerous EPMTA recitals along with Solo and Sonata Festivals. In 2019, he won third place in the EPSMF Competition for Young Musicians. Moreover, John also plays the violin in his school’s varsity orchestra. In all his years of high school, he has been selected to play in the El Paso All Region orchestra as well as the YISD Honors orchestra. Aside from music, John is an active member of Eastwood’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter, where he won first place in the state Parliamentary Procedure competition. He is also part of his school’s Speech and Debate team, where he has gained national recognitions of excellence and merit. Some of his hobbies include playing basketball, video games, and solving Rubix cubes. John believes that he will be able to touch the hearts of any audience through music. He admires the universality of music and aspires to share his gift with many people.

RECOGNITION FOR ACHIEVEMENT: Taekyu Lee, piano

TAEKYU LEE was born in Seoul, South Korea and immigrated to the United States at the age of six. He has lived in El Paso since and began playing the piano two years later with encouragement from his mother. Although starting with jazz piano and improvisation, Taekyu began focusing more on classical piano. He also started playing the cello at age ten. Yet, his passion for playing the piano developed by his late middle school years and now he finds enjoyment in learning new pieces on the piano. Throughout the years, he has played in local EPMTA competitions, such as the solo, sonata, and baroque festivals, EPSYO’s Youn Artist Piano Competition, and various recitals held by EPMTA. He is an IB student Coronado High School and plays the cello in the Coronado High School Orchestra, participating in All Region and UIL State Solo and Ensemble. He has recently started using his talent in music to reach out tohis community through performances in local nursing homes, as a soloist or through the Musical Ensemble Club which he founded. He currently hopes to further grow in his love for music.

The 2020 INSTRUMENTS FOR YOUNG LIVES AWARDS RECIPIENTS are also recognized. This EPSMF program awards new, step-up instruments to young musicians who demonstrate academic excellence, musical aptitude, and unmet financial need.

Javier Barraza -flute

Javier Barraza is sixteen years old and attends San Elizario High School. He is a member of the San Elizario Band, Game Day Crew, and Wind Ensemble. His "dreams and aspirations are to become a performer for a symphony orchestra."

Andrew Griñé- double bass

Andrew Griñé is fourteen years old and attends Coronado High School. He is a member of the Coronado Marching Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Music Ensemble Club. He plays with the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestras and Chamber Group as well as the El Paso Jazz Ensemble. "In my free time, I love to write music."

Johanna Romero- flute

Johanna Romero is thirteen years old and attends Anthony Middle School. She is a member of the Varsity Band and plays with the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra. "I really enjoy and look forward to attending band class and going to music lessons/rehearsal for EPSYO. I love learning something new!" Applications for the 2020-2021 Competition for Young Musicians and Instruments for Young Live Program will be available in September 2020. Watch for announcements.

The El Paso Society for Musicians of the Future (EPSMF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality classical music programs. The organization has a growing commitment to outreach to the youth of the Borderland.

EPSMF Announces 2019 Original Music Winners

The El Paso Society for Musicians of the Future (EPSMF) announces the winners for the 2019 OM/NI (Original Music/New Ideas) Competition. Six finalists were selected from national submissions to have their original piano scores performed by El Paso professionals in the OM/NI Competition Showcase on Saturday, August 11, 2019 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in El Paso’s Upper Valley. This competition called to exceptionally talented students between the ages of 17 and 25 to submit original scores for piano and compete for cash awards.
